What is Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS)?
IC/BPS is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. It’s more common in women and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain.
What treatments are available for IC/BPS?
Treatments for IC/BPS vary based on the severity of symptoms. They may include lifestyle changes, medications, bladder instillations, physical therapy, or more advanced treatments.
What causes chronic UTIs?
Chronic UTIs can occur due to bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics and structural abnormalities in the urinary tract.
How do I know if I have IC/BPS or a UTI?
UTIs usually cause burning during urination and can be treated with antibiotics. IC/BPS symptoms are more persistent, often involving bladder pressure and pain without a bacterial infection. The main difference is that a UTI causes burning during urination and IC/BPS causes relief during urination as the bladder empties. Most other symptoms are the same. Once you get an infection, it’s just going to get worse with time until you start on an antibiotic, whereas IC/BPS can either continue to flare over time – or come and go with stress, diet, etc.
Can IC/BPS be cured?
While there is no cure for IC/BPS, many treatments can manage and significantly reduce symptoms, improving quality of life.
What should I expect during my first appointment?
During your first visit, we’ll review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and perform any necessary tests to diagnose your condition and recommend treatment options. If you’re currently experiencing a flare in your symptoms, we may begin treatment therapy on the first appointment.
How do you diagnose IC/BPS?
IC/BPS is diagnosed through a combination of patient history, symptom assessment, and ruling out other potential causes, such as UTIs or other bladder conditions.
What can I do to prevent chronic UTIs?
Preventing chronic UTIs involves drinking plenty of water, urinating after intercourse, practicing good hygiene, and sometimes using preventative medications or supplements.
When should I see a specialist for my bladder symptoms?
If you experience ongoing bladder pain, frequent UTIs, or symptoms of IC/BPS that don’t improve with standard treatments, it’s time to see a bladder specialist.
Do I need a referral to see a urologist at The Bladder Clinic?
Many insurance companies do not require a referral to see a specialist. You can contact your insurance company if a referral is needed.
